Allegheny Township man writes song to aid victims of Sago mine

Randy Brock watched the mine tragedy unfold Jan. 2 in Sago, W.Va., he was moved to action.

The Allegheny Township resident has just released a CD and set up a trust fund to raise money for the immediate families of the miners.

Brock, a construction worker who grew up around coal mines and has been trained to work in them, works in the coal power-generation industry.

While watching the events unfold on television, Brock, who had dabbled in music writing when his son was born 30 years ago, began to strum a song in his mind.

"I was sitting there watching TV and I thought 'Someone should write a song about this.' I took out my guitar, and about 45 minutes later, I had the song written."

He titled it "Cold Mountain Mourning."

Brock wanted to share this tribute with others and, at the same time, give something back to the victims' families.

With this in mind, Brock hired Soundscape Studio to help record the song, and Blue Collar Records agreed to produce the song for mass distribution. Eddie Pokusa, Brock's cousin through marriage, sang the lyrics for the CD.

Brock set up the Cold Mountain-Sago Relief Fund, through which he could collect profits from sales of the song and give 100 percent of the proceeds to victims' families. The money will be given to the families to use for educational and personal needs.

Brock says "Cold Mountain Mourning" is a somber, melancholy pop-folk tune on the order of "Ode to Billy Joe" by Bobby Gentry and "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot.

"All of us involved are pleased to be able to bring this song in hopes that the public also enjoys our efforts and are moved to buy this CD with their generous donations, and proceeds going to the Cold Mountain-Sago Relief Fund."
